WHO YOU WILL BECOME
Kyle Webb

"And the angel of Jehovah came, and sat under the oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites. 12And the angel of Jehovah appeared unto him, and said unto him, Jehovah is with thee, thou mighty man of valor" (Judges 6:11-12, ASV).
I was listening to a sermon, recently, when I heard these verses read. As the preacher continued, he said that Gideon was probably looking over his shoulder, wondering who God was talking about. This was before he destroyed the altar of Baal (Judges 6:28-35). This was before his army was dwindled from 32,000 men to only 300, who were, by the power of God, able to subdue the Midianites (Judges 7 & 8). "The angel of Jehovah appeared unto him, and said unto him, Jehovah is with thee, thou mighty man of valor."
I think, also, of men like Peter. We are given the account of Peter meeting Jesus. "[Andrew] findeth first his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messiah (which is, being interpreted, Christ). 42 He brought him unto Jesus. Jesus looked upon him, and said, Thou art Simon the son of John: thou shalt be called Cephas (which is by interpretation, Peter)" (John 1:41-42, ASV). The name "Peter", we know, means "a stone", as reference is given in some of the more modern translations. Jesus knew who "Simon" would become. He would, at times, struggle with his faith, but would be the first to publicly confess Jesus as the Christ (Matt. 16:16). He would also go on to preach the first gospel sermon (Acts 2) and would die a martyr for the cause of Christ (John 21:18-19). He wasn't there yet, but the events of his life would lead him to be the man called "Peter".
I am of the belief that, while God knows who we are in the present day, He also sees who we will become. He "knows our every weakness" and failure, but He loves us anyway. He knows how strong our faith will become.
God has vision where we do not. We cannot see what will happen, but God has chosen us to be His servants. From the moment we become Christians, we have a duty to bring lost souls to Him. We will make mistakes, and the road of life is not an easy one; however, we should try every day to fight "the good fight", finish "the race" and keep "the faith". We should remember that, though God sees who we are, He also sees who we will become. As He has been in time past with those such as Paul, Moses and others, He will be patient with us until we get there. We also know that life is not a given. We will not be here forever. Our time on this earth could end any day now, so we should strive to be today who we will become tomorrow.
